Paul Black worked as a researcher and lecturer in physics for twenty years before moving to a chair in science education. He made contributions, both to school curriculum development in the Nuffield Projects, and to research into learning and assessment. He chaired the government’s Task Group on Assessment and Testing in 1988. He has served as Vice-President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics, on the ESRC Research Grant’s Board, on projects of the USA National Research Council and as visiting professor at Stanford University in California. He is Professor Emeritus at King's College London, and his work on formative assessment with Dylan Wiliam and others has had widespread impact.
