Secondary Teacher Education Programme (STEP) 2017 - 2019

Entry requirements
  • A British 1st or 2nd Class Honours Degree or recognised equivalent.
  • The minimum requirements for English language proficiency are as follows:

IELTS for UKVI (Academic): Overall band score of 7.0 with a minimum score of 6.5 in each component.  Applicants with an overall score of 6.5 (with a minimum 6.0 in each component) will be considered and, if selected, will be eligible to receive a conditional offer.  All conditional offer holders will be required to attend and successfully complete an approved pre-sessional programme in the UK and demonstrate that they have reached an overall score of 7.0 before they are formally enrolled onto the STEP programme.  Please see the Tier 4 requirements below for exemptions.

  • Minimum of one year’s experience teaching in a Religious Education Centre.  
  • To fall under the ITREB jurisdiction of any one of the following countries: Afghanistan, Australia and New Zealand, Bangladesh, Canada, Democratic Republic of Congo, Far East, France, India, Iran, Kenya, Madagascar, Pakistan, Portugal, Syria, Tajikistan, Tanzania, United Arab Emirates, Uganda, United Kingdom or the United States of America.
  • To enter a contract-bound commitment of a minimum of 3 years to work as a teacher within the ITREB network. 
How to apply
Please ask for an application pack using the online request form on our website or request it from your National ITREB office. Please make sure the name on your application is the same as the name on your passport.
  • Read the guidance notes before filling in the application form, and include the following:
  • Your personal statement
  • Official / verified transcripts from all undergraduate and postgraduate study 
  • A copy of your degree certificate(s)
  • IELTS for UKVI test certificate (if applicable)
  • Four Reference Letters: Submit two academic references (if you are unable to produce two academic references, the Selection Committee will accept one academic reference and one professional work reference). The third reference letter should be a character reference and the fourth reference letter should be an ITREB reference. Reference letters must be submitted in a sealed envelope or the referee can email their reference letter in confidence directly to
  • Deadline: Completed applications, with all relevant documents, must be received/postmarked by 4 November 2016. (For further information on the application process, including dates, please refer to the Notes of Guidance document that is available in the application pack.)
STEP is a fully funded scholarship programme, which covers the cost of tuition fees, accommodation and includes a living allowance.
Tier 4 Student Visa Requirements:
  • In accordance with UK visa rules, the IIS exempts candidates from the English language requirements if they have completed undergraduate studies taught in the following countries (or if you are a national): Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, the United Kingdom and the United States of America. 
  • Please note that UKVI limits how long a student may spend in the UK studying at degree level (and above) to a total of 5 years. This may affect your application if you have already studied in the UK. Please promptly notify the Student Services Unit if you have any queries in this regard.
