In his On the Immortality of the Soul (IV 7) Plotinus argues at length against the Stoic doctrine of the soul. In addition to the specific arguments directed against this or that point of the Stoic account of the soul as a special kind of body, Plotinus has a general objection against emergentism: the soul cannot arise from the material pneuma, let alone intellect.
