The Professional Teacher Educators' Programme

The Professional Teacher Educators’ Programme is an international initiative to develop human resources to facilitate the effective implementation of the Institute’s Ta‘lim curriculum in the field. Through institutional collaboration between the Aga Khan University’s Institute for Educational Development (AKU-IED), the Institute of Ismaili Studies (IIS), and Ismaili Tariqah and Religious Education Boards (ITREBs), the programme will develop a core group of Professional Teacher Educators who will play an important role in improving the quality of Ta‘lim-based instruction in their respective constituencies.

The PTE Programme is an innovative project that combines the unique strengths of its partner institutions in developing and implementing a context-specific educational programme. AKU-IED’s contribution will ensure that programme participants acquire in-depth exposure to the latest thinking and practice in the field of education generally and with particular reference to teacher education. The Institute of Ismaili Studies offers the intellectual and institutional resources for approaching religious education from a civlisational perspective, while ITREBs provide opportunities in the field for the creative applications of the models developed.

The one year programme offer participants three periods of residential training interspersed by periods of fieldwork in their home countries.  Since its launch in 2002, PTEP has graduated 153 candidates who are working in various capacities in their respective countries.
