Dr Nazmin Halani

Dr Nazmin Halani is a Senior Education Officer and leads the Pedagogy and Resources Unit in the Department of Curriculum Studies (DCS). He has led the establishment of the annual IIS-STEP Internship programme and continues to oversee its implementation. From 2008 to 2013 he was the Unit Lead for Curriculum Evaluation responsible for developing and implementing evaluation strategies.

Currently, Nazmin coordinates DCS input into the Secondary Teacher Education Programme (STEP) while contributing to various aspects of the programme such as candidate selection and MA supervision . Since the inception of the programme in 2007, he has been facilitating curriculum related sessions and providing lesson planning as well as field support to STEP teachers.

Nazmin joined the IIS in January 1999 as an Education Officer for the Professional Teacher Education Programme (PTEP) and led the curriculum development process while actively contributing to other aspects of the programme conceptualisation, implementation and evaluation. From 2002-2005 he was the Coordinator of the Professional Teacher Education Programme (PTEP) at the IIS. During this period, he played an active role in PTEP as an Internal Evaluator, Mentor and Core Faculty Member, presenting on the topic of ‘History and Historical Thinking’ and ‘Literature in Muslim Societies’, and facilitating a number of pedagogy related sessions. He has also contributed to the conceptualisation and been a faculty member of the International Waezeen Training Programme (IWTP) and International Adolescent Education Programme (IAEP), and has developed the curriculum module on history for IAEP. Recently, he has been providing input into the curriculum review for International Training Programmes.

During his time at the IIS, Nazmin has assisted on various projects in DCS and other departments in the IIS, including the cataloguing of the Khojki manuscripts.

Nazmin is a graduate of the Institute's Graduate Programme in Islamic Studies and Humanities (GPISH), completing a Master's degree in Social Anthropology from The University of Oxford. He attained Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) for secondary level education in the UK in June 2006. He brings a wealth of experience in the areas of curriculum development and teacher education acquired through his work with the Ismaili Tariqah and Religious Education Boards (ITREBs) in India and in the UK. He was also a board member for ITREB UK where he was responsible for overseeing the curriculum development of educational programmes and activities for the Ismaili community in the UK.

Nazmin has completed his PhD from the University of Warwick, focusing on the processes of religious nurture and identity formation of children in the UK.
