This Arabic-language lecture will be held at 16.00 BST.
This lecture will provide an overview of the Ikhwān al-Ṣafāʾ (the Brethren of Purity), to whom the epistle al-Risāla al-jāmiʿa is attributed. It will also briefly explore the content of the epistles that make up the corpus of the Rasāʾil Ikhwān al-Ṣafāʾ, with a particular focus on al-Risāla al-jāmiʿa. In addition, it will reflect on the Ikhwān’s identity, which continues to be a subject of debate among researchers, and discuss their relationship with religious groups in general and the Ismaili faith in particular.
The lecture will cover Dr Kacimi’s two forthcoming books, al-Risāla al-jāmiʿa and the Epistles of the Ikhwān al-Ṣafāʾ, both of which are attributed to the hidden Imām Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Allāh by some Ismaili missionaries. However, these epistles have also been associated with al-Ḥakīm al-Majrīṭī, and the lecture will examine the reasons for this attribution.
Following on from this will be a discussion on the nature of the relationship between the Ikhwān’s philosophical thinking and al-Risāla al-jāmiʿa. Al-Risāla al-jāmiʿa is a summation of the ideas and values found in the compendium of epistles, through which the Brethren of Purity intended to bring about an intellectual revolution in the understanding of religious laws based on reason and philosophical teachings.
Finally, the lecture will briefly evaluate the previous editions of al-Risāla al-jāmiʿa – namely those by Jamil Saliba, Mustafa Ghaleb, Arif Tamer, and Hossam Khaddour. It will conclude with a discussion on the critical edition that Dr Kacimi has been working on, as supervised by Professor Wilfred Madlung before his death. This edition will be translated by the renowned scholar Carmela Baffioni and will be co-published by Oxford University and the Institute of Ismaili Studies.

Mourad Kacimi
Dr Mourad Kacimi graduated from the University of Alicante, Spain, in 2015 with a PhD in Arabic and Islamic Studies. He previously obtained a BA in Islamic Studies from the University of Oran (Algeria) in 1999. Currently, he is a Professor at the University of Valencia, where he teaches Arabic language and Arabic literature to non-native speakers. He has also previously taught at the University of Murcia and the University of Alicante.
Dr Kacimi is the author of a book titled Jacob Xalabín: presentación y traducción al árabe. He is currently preparing two other books for publication; – one which is on the Brethren of Purity and the other which is a critical edition of one of their epistles, al-Risāla al-jāmiʿa. He has also participated in the publication of eight other books and has published several peer-reviewed journal articles in the fields of Islamic intellectual thought and Arabic literature, Arabic philosophy and Mysticism, and Arab and Islamic studies.
الرسالة الجامعة ذات الفوائد النافعة:
محتواها وعلاقتها برسائل إخوان الصفاء
في هذه المداخلة سنقدّم نبذة عن إخوان الصفاء بحكم أنّ الرسالة الجامعة تنسب إليهم، ثم نتطرّق بإيجاز إلى محتوى الرسائل ومضمون الجامعة. إضافة إلى ذلك، سنعمد إلى محاولة إماطة اللثام عن هوية هذه الجماعة التي لا تزال محل نقاش بين الباحثين وعلاقتها بالفرق الدينية عامة والعقيدة الإسماعيلية خاصة. إذ أنّ كتابيّ رسائل إخوان الصفاء والرسالة الجامعة نُسبا إلى الإمام المستور أحمد بن عبد الله. أيضا لا يفوتنا تفنيد نسبتهما إلى الحكيم المجريطي الذي اقترن اسمه بكلا الكتابين وسبب ذلك. كما أنّنا سنوضح طبيعة العلاقة بين الموسوعة الفلسفية للإخوان وهذه الرسالة التي جمعت ما في الرسائل من أفكار وقيم عمد بها واضعوها إلى إحداث ثورة فكرية لفهم الشرائع وفق المنهج الفلسفي العقلاني. علاوة على ذلك، سنقدّم تقييم وجيز للطبعات السابقة للرسالة الجامعة: طبعة جميل صليبا، طبعة مصطفى غالب، طبعة عارف تامر، وطبعة حسام خضور. كما سنخلص إلى ضرورة إنشاء الطبعة الجديدة التي يعدّها المعهد الإسماعيلي بلندن بالتنسيق مع جامعة أكسفرد والتي استخدم محقّقها تحت إشراف الباحث الكبير ولفرد مادلونغ ما يزيد عن ثماني عشرة مخطوطة. ويجدر بنا الإشارة إلى أن هذه الطبعة الجديدة ستترجمها الباحثة الفذة حول إخوان الصفاء كارميلا بافيوني.

مراد قاسمي
الدكتور مراد قاسمي خريج جامعة ألكنت بإسبانيا سنة 2015، حاصل على شهادة ليسانس في العلوم الإسلامية من جامعة وهران (الجزائر) سنة 1999. حاليا يشغل منصب أستاذ جامعي بجامعة بلنسية حيث يدرّس اللغة العربية والأدب العربي لغير الناطقين بها. كما أنّه سبق وأن درّس في جامعة مورسيا وجامعة ألكنت. الدكتور مراد قاسمي له كتاب مطبوع وآخران قيد النشر، أحدهما حول إخوان الصفاء والآخر دراسة وتحقيق علمي للرسالة الجامعة. كما أنّه شارك في طباعة ثمانية كتب، إضافة إلى أنّ له ما يزيد عن أربعة عشر مقال علمي، كلّها تصب حول تاريخ الفكر الإسلامي والأدب العربي، الفلسفة والتصوف الإسلامي إلى غير ذلك من بحوث تتعلّق بالدراسات العربية والإسلامية.
