Rosa Barugh

Rosa provides academic writing support to existing STEP and GPISH students in both taught classes and one-to-one sessions. She also works with ITREBS in other countries. This involves providing support and advice on their preparatory programmes for STEP and GPISH applicants to ensure that the IIS can continue to recruit candidates of the highest quality from a diverse range of countries.  In addition, Rosa assists in setting up and monitoring the pre-sessional courses for GPISH and STEP students.

Rosa joined the IIS after three years working internationally, most recently in Senegal where she was doing consultancy for British Council, setting up their Young Learner English Programme from inception, syllabus writing, training teaching staff and writing policies and procedures for the new teaching programme. She also worked on a Peacekeeping English Project, training teachers and assisting them in obtaining academic qualifications for teaching.  Prior to that she was in Tanzania working on a DfID-funded nationwide teacher training project across 35 rural locations, aimed at improving the quality of education and of teacher training in colleges. From 2010 – 2011 she was in Sudan, teaching English and IELTS, examining for IELTS, doing monitoring and evaluation of teacher training projects in the field, and setting up educational projects for visually impaired students at a government school.  

She worked at Refugee Council in Brixton for three years as Special Projects Coordinator, and prior to that, lived and worked in the Middle East – Lebanon, Syria and Jordan – for over three years where she taught English at several universities and ran pre-sessionals for medical students.  

She has a special interest in inclusion, particularly in the form of mainstreaming special educational needs (SEN) into the everyday classroom and has just completed a British Council course on SEN. She also has a BA degree in Social Policy, a PGCE in ESOL, a CELTA and an MA in Global Ethics.
