Zulfiqar Khimani is originally from Karachi, Pakistan. He studied in the Graduate Programme in Islamic Studies and Humanities (GPISH) at the IIS, from 2006 – 2009. He then earned his MPhil from the University of Cambridge in Modern Society and Global Transformations with a focus on critical social theory and media studies. Prior to his studies at GPISH, he obtained his undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering and a postgraduate degree in social sciences from Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Institute of Science and Technology.
Zulfiqar was also a recipient of Aga KhanA title granted by the Shah of Persia to the then Ismaili Imam in 1818 and inherited by each of his successors to the Imamate. Foundation International Scholarship (2011-2012) and is currently pursuing his PhD at the Department of Sociology, University of Cambridge. His PhD thesis is interdisciplinary and investigates trans-local flows and networks within the context of religious communities. Zulfiqar’s academic interests include critical social theory, contemporary Muslim communities, media studies and Philosophy.
Zulfiqar holds a wide experience of field research. He has worked as a research consultant for Sindh Education Foundation, one of the premier educational organisations in Sindh, Pakistan. Before starting his PhD at the University of Cambridge, Zulfiqar was working with Aga Khan Development NetworkThe Aga Khan Development Network (AKDN) is a contemporary endeavour of the Ismaili Imamat to realise the ethics and social conscience of Islam through institutional action.
