The Rasa 'il Ikhwan al-Safa' (Epistles of the Brethren of Purity) is a unique work in Islamic history consisting of approximately fifty-two epistles (rasa'il) on a wide range of subjects.
Professor Carmela Baffioni has joined The Institute of Ismaili Studies as a Senior Research Fellow, primarily to work on the Epistles of the Brethren of Purity publication series.
Another publication was released by the IIS in October: On Logic: An Arabic Critical Edition and English Translation of Epistles 10-14, edited and translated by Professor Carmela Baffioni. This is the second volume of primary text from the Epistles of the Brethren of Purity (Rasa’il Ikhwan al-Safa’).
Key outputs of the Institute's research on Ismaili history, its intellectual traditions and analysis of key manuscripts have led to numerous books published on Ismaili studies. In this context, two specific publication series have been developed, the Ismaili Heritage Series and the Ismaili Texts and Translations Series. We also have a series devoted to the Epistles of the Brethren of Purity, in which a complete critical edition and annotated English translation of the Rasa’il Ikhwan al-Safa’ will be published.
