This lecture explores various historical and doctrinal aspects of Ismā‘īlī traditions, especially the notions of knowledge and authority from the Alamūt period to the modern time; modernity and the move of the seat of the Ismā‘īlī Imamate to the Western world. Key points of transformation in the Ismā‘īlī discourse during these periods will be discussed, including its openness, spiritual emphasis on the understanding of ritual law, its metaphysical and comprehensive cosmological dimensions, and the esoteric (bāṭinī) approaches to understanding the world and faith. The talk will address these points in the wider context of the Ismā‘īlīs and their interactions with various Muslim communities and fields of thought, including Sufism and philosophy. This will allow a fresh perspective on the history, cultures, and beliefs of the Ismā‘īlīs, and will address some of the recent misconceptions surrounding them in recent scholarship and media platforms.

Saeed Najdi
Dr Saeed Ali Najdi is a Lebanon-based writer and scholar. He obtained his doctorate in sociology from the Lebanese University in 2020, where he had previously gained a master's degree in anthropology. He is a member of the Arab Council for Social Sciences. His research focuses on social issues related to authoritarianism, sectarianism, gender discrimination, social inequality, and participation in and strengthening of civil society. His recent book, Knowledge and Authority in the Islamic Heritage (al-Ma‘rifa wa al-Sulṭa fī al-Turāth al-Islāmī, Beirut: Arab Centre for Research and Policy Studies, 2023), explores the notions of knowledge and authority in the Ismaili tradition. He has presented at various conferences and workshops also has published many articles in different academic journals and websites.
Nuha al-Sha‘ar
Senior Research Associate
Dr Nuha al-Sha‘ar has a PhD in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies from the University of Cambridge, MPhil in Educational Research from the University of Cambridge and an MA in African and Asian History the School of African and Asian Studies, SOAS. She has taught at various academic institutions in the UK, and the Arab world.
Dr Al-Sha'ar’s current research interests include the social and intellectual history of Muslim political thought, particularly in the 9th – 10th centuries CE. She is interested in how udaba' or litterateurs used the Holy Qur'an to develop certain cultural concepts, which were later to dominate Arabic linguistic and literary-theoretical thinking.
ملخص المحاضرة: تعالج المحاضرة جوانب تاريخيّة وعقائديّة متعددة في التقاليد الإسماعيليّة وخصوصا مفاهيم المعرفة والسلطة بدءا من مرحلة ألموت وحتى الفترة المعاصرة واالدخول في الحداثة وانتقال النص والخطاب الإسماعيلي إلى العالم الغربي كدار هجرة جديدة. ستناقش المحاضرة بعض النقاط الأساسية مثل النص الإسماعيلي ورمزيته المفتوحة ، والبعد الروحي في فهم الشريعة ، والميتافيزيقا القائمة على بعدٍ كوزمولوجي شاملٍ معقّد، والتأويل والباطن بوصفه معطًى رمزيًّا في رؤية العالم والدين. المحاضرة ستناقش هذه الأفكار في السياق العام للدعوة الإسماعيليّة وتفاعل الإسماعيليين مع مختلف الجماعات المسلمة الأخرى ومجالات الفكر بمافي ذلك الصوفيّة والفلسفة. ستقدّم المحاضرة منظورا جديدا حول تاريخ وثقافات ومعتقدات الإسماعيليين، وستتطرق إلى بعض المفاهيم الخاطئة التي أحاطت بالإسماعيليين في الدراسات الحديثة وبعض المنابر الإعلاميّة حديثا.

سعيد علي نجدي
سعيد علي نجدي كاتب وباحث لبناني. حاصل على الدكتوراه من الجامعة اللبنانية في ميدان علم الاجتماع والمعرفة والثقافة (2020)، ودرجة الماجستير في الأنثروبولوجيا من الجامعة اللبنانية أيضا. عضو في المجلس العربي للعلوم الاجتماعية. يتناول بحثه العديد من القضايا الاجتماعيّة المتعلقة بالسلطويّة والطائفيّة والتمييز والجندرية والتمييز بين الجنسين وعدم المساواة وأهميّة المشاركة وتعزيز المجتمع المدني. يركّز كتابه الأخير ”المعرفة والسلطة في التراث الإسلامي“ (بيروت: المركز العربي للأبحاث ودراسة السياسات، ٢٠٢٣) على مفاهيم السلطة والمعرفة في السياق الإسماعيلي. شارك في العديد من المؤتمرات والندوات، وله العديد من الدراسات والأبحاث والمقالات في عدد من الدوريات والمجلات العلمية والمواقع الإلكترونية.
